Residential Care

Residential Care will always be our first priority.

We offer free lifelong residential care to the homeless elderly at both our homes, Bhalobasha and Charunibash. Members stay with us till the end of their lives (unless we can reunite them with their family and ensure that they receive the appropriate standard of care at home). We welcome people of all caste, creed, faith or orientation and when it is their time to leave this world, the arrangements are made with dignity and in accordance with their wishes.

We provide our members with the opportunity to rest and heal in a loving family environment where they can recover from the trauma of being separated from their family members and being homeless.

We believe that there should be a sense of community in each home and encourage our members to participate in different aspects of the running of the house to the extent that their health allows. We have fully trained, experienced staff including a cook, medical aid providers and a manager in each home as well as other specialists on call as required who expertly oversee the health, nutrition, emotional and physical care aspects of living with and caring for the elderly.

We organise and encourage our members to take part in group activities such as board games, impromptu music sessions, creative workshops and reading sessions which they enjoy. Enthusiastic volunteers make these interactions very special for everyone.

We run an outreach school for underprivileged children from the local communities at both homes. These schools, called the Happy Classrooms are hubs of activity where the children are supported with their schoolwork and also given extra curricular activities to do such as crafts, social work and music lessons. Our members often take part in these activities resulting in a happy interaction for both young and old.

We encourage visitors, whether individual, families or groups to come and spend time with our members, talk to them, share a meal or even perform for them. These visits are often the highlight of the members day and are talked about with childlike delight for many months.

We organise periodic excursions for our members as also our staff so that they can see how the world around us is changing. This is a challenging exercise given their age, physical condition and emotional issues and we rely on dedicated volunteers and staff to arrange this in a way that is safe and comfortable for all. We also organise an annual away day to recognise and celebrate the work that our staff do with such enthusiasm and commitment

Non-Residential Care

Medical & Financial support

We have a group of non-residential elderly members, who due to their circumstances are unable to provide for themselves; they receive a monthly allowance and/or required medical assistance.

Caring for the Sabar Community

The Sabar people belong to the Munda ethnic group tribe. During the colonial period, they were classed as one of the 'criminal tribes' under Criminal Tribes Act 1871, and suffer from social stigma and ostracism in modern times. One such group lives in Kaikala village in Hooghly district in conditions of extreme poverty. Among them are 11 elderly persons who have been suffering from abandonment, disease and extreme poverty. FOKE in collaboration with a local voluntary group named Kaikala Chetana have adopted these 11 elders and are trying to improve their living conditions by providing them with monthly food rations, clothing, blankets and basic medical interventions. We are also supporting other individuals from the community based on their circumstances and need.

Rescue Operations

In collaboration with NGOs, hospitals, and police station’s and sometimes directly as per emergency, FOKE rescues old people, off the street, and provides required support.

Educational Support

Bhalobasha

Charunibash

Bhalobasha

Charunibash

Primary level children attend classes from Monday to Saturday. The students are all from disadvantaged families and they receive only a very basic education by attending the local government schools. Our school helps the children with the learning gap.
The total number of students in Bhalobasha is 35.

At CharuNibash, primary school-aged children from poor rural backgrounds attend weekday follow-up school, and on Saturday they come for extracurricular activities. The teachers have been recruited locally and trained to instruct and supervise all classes.
The total number of students in Charunibash is 50

Educational Sponsorship

We also try to support deserving students by sponsoring their schools fees and education related costs.

Partnership with Behala Sujan Social Welfare (BSSW)

The aim of BSSW is to enhance the learning programme, they have named this initiative as ‘Happy Classroom”. In Bhalobasha, since January 2021, Classes V- to XI was extended and students are taught by two teachers, recruited by BSSW, in Arts and Science subjects. Each Saturday is specified for dance, music, art/craft and drama by volunteers. Our partnership with BSSW also involves training of existing teachers as well as local young people. Our school is attracting more students from the area and our goal is to increase the numbers of students and teachers.

Health Programmes

Medical Camps

At both homes medical and optical camps are conducted for the members, children and local community. Government medical organisations have been constant in their support of the camps. They usually occur twice or sometimes thrice per year.

Annual Activities

Blanket Distribution

Annual Blanket distribution on winter nights around the streets in Kolkata. It involves a group of FOKE members and volunteers visiting street dwellers late at night and lovingly placing an extra blanket over them.

Celebrations

All festivals and National days are celebrated with great enthusiasm in both homes.

Sports & Culture

Annual Cultural Programme and Sports Event This event is usually held annually at each home. The students from our schools participate in various events and our members also have their own modified sports events. The prize giving is enjoyed enormously by all.

Staff Appreciation

An annual day out with all the staff of FOKE is our way of showing our gratitude to them. We have spent the day at seaside resorts, the zoo, and other places that they might not have been. We always have a quiz, with prizes, and a great deal of fun.
